Preserve your foods
Preserving foods, is another great way to save. You can have fun with this too. While enjoying the sun, plant a garden. Its a great way to relax, while the kids play in the backyard or better yet your child may be old enough to want to help. You can plant and preserve just about anything. My children love digging the carrots up and munching on them. Sometimes I even catch the kids making bets on who will eat a hot pepper from our garden.
If you like fruits, Buy them when on sale and preserve them as well. Strawberry jam is a favorite in this house.
Preserving takes time and work, but well worth the costs, when saving on the budget.
I have listed a few foods and how you can preserve them.
*****
Strawberry Jam
Makes 4 pints
2 quarts of fresh strawberries (Take the greens off and dice them up) 7 cups sugar 1 package pectin or 1 package of gelatin
Note: Read the recommended amount of sugar needed on the package as some packages come in packages of 1-1/2 ounces.
Once your strawberries are diced and greens peeled off them, place in a strawberries in a large bowl with about 4 cups of sugar. Add the pectin or gelatin, stir and let sit for about 15 minutes. Then place in a large pot and turn the heat to high. stir until it thickens. Once it comes to a boil, continue to stir as you add the rest of the sugar. Skim the foam off and dispose.
Remove from heat and let stand for about 10 minutes.
Place into canning jars or Tupperware containers for freezing.
Corn on the Cob
This one is really easy
Use as many cobs as you want to freeze (just use more pots)
In a large pot boil enough water that will cover the cobs completely
Once the water comes to a boil place cobs into the pot.( do not over load the pot with to many cobs at once)
boil the cobs for 3 minutes Remove from heat and let cool
then place into freezer bags and freeze them
